Crushed Velvet – Charcoal Scrub Cleanser
Where to start? This one is particularly good for oily or acneic skin, but anyone who likes to scrub or exfoliate will probably LOVE this one. This started off with my cousin asking me to make a version similar to another company’s product. They have SLS in theirs and it’s just not a great idea to put that on your skin.
As I made my way through this idea on paper, I got more and more excited (I had quite a list of ‘What If’s!). At first, I thought I’d use some of the liquid soap I make in this. Then I realized what would be even more perfect: CREAM SOAP!
Originally formulated to be a shaving soap with a low, close lather, Cream Soap has taken on new life in recent years. The longer cream soap rests (also called the ‘Rot’), the better it gets. The cream soap used in this is 2 years old. Cream soap is one of the more complicated soaps I’ve made. It utilizes both Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Potassium Hydroxide (KOH), quite a lot of added glycerin and either added stearic acid or oils and fats naturally high in stearic acid. Because stearic acid contributes to the Creamy consistency of Cream Soap, I use both high stearic fats (stearic acid is naturally found in tallow and palm oil) and added stearic acid. I won’t wear you down with further details about Cream Soap (because I’m a bit of a Soap Nerd, I think, and not everyone is always super happy to hear details that I find exciting), save it to say that this is a VERY nice scrub and I think much of that is due to the Cream Soap!
Enriched with Rhassoul Clay (also known as Moroccan Red Clay – long known for it’s efficacy in treating acneic skin), French Green Clay – known to be a complexion improver, Activated Charcoal – removes impurities.
To Use: Moisten Face, scoop out a finger full of scrub and apply to face. Use gentle pressure during the scrub, avoid getting too close to eyes. Rinse.
