Skin Loving Avocado

Just how luxurious can a  soap get?img_1946

In it’s previous incarnation, Avocado soap was a true luxury, with many of our customers remarking that they no longer had to use moisturizer after introducing the Avocado soap into their skin care regimen.  This is even more – more superfatted, more luxurious.

A fine tallow soap enriched with the flesh of organic avocado, vitamin-rich organic avocado oil, emu oil, organic aloe vera, jojoba, organic shea butter, raw organic cocoa butter and lanolin.   Essential oils of lavender, bergamot, black pepper and melissa contribute their scent and qualities.  This fine facial bar is excellent skin care.  It’s also the gentlest bar we make.

img_1940This is a LOW SUDSING formula – because of it’s luxurious ingredients and being coconut oil-free, this soap will not make a big, bubbly suds – but it will clean the skin all the same – well not the ‘same’.  It will be gentler than other, more sudsy soaps.  🙂

Remember that these super fatted soaps do have a shelf life – they’re good for about a year after obtaining them, so use them or put them in the freezer.   Offered at $7.00 per bar here

Herbal Bar/ Dog Bar

Mmmmmmmm…. I love this bar… img_1937
Not the same kind of bar that the song is about, but I DO love this bar. It’s far and away one of my most favorite creations.  After cutting this soap, I like to let it cure in the living room – the whole entire room takes on the beautiful woody scent.
This was originally intended to be dog soap and many will still call it that, which is why it’s still got ‘dog’ in it’s name.
But it’s so beloved by so many as a shampoo bar, shower soap, kitchen soap, etc., it is not exclusively a Dog Shampoo Soap anymore.
The soap is NOT Grey!  LOL  It’s a very light green from the Nettles – I didn’t realize my supply was so low, so the green isn’t as vibrant as usual.
Crafted with a nice blend of grass fed beef and buffalo tallows, olive oil, cocoa butter, coconut oil and shea butter; enhanced with silk, nettles, meadowfoam seed oil, hemp seed oil, rice bran oil,  jojoba oil and fresh rosemary from my garden.  The scent is a proprietary blend of essential oils.  Just Beautiful.

This one doesn’t stay in stock long, so get it while you can.

Honey Oatmeal Almond

Today, meet Oatmeal Honey Almond Soap.  This is a luxurious soap that is scented with a blend of img_1936essential oils and a little fragrance oil.  Now, I know some of you are saying ‘that’s not what Intrinsic Alchemist is about!’ and you’d be mostly right.  I prefer to use essential oils exclusively.  However, from time to time a fragrance oil comes along that is phthalate-free and so pretty, it just begs to be made into soap.  Sometimes, I smell scents and see colors (I know.. it’s ok.  I’ve been called nuts my whole life) – when I do, those colors almost always come to a vibrant life in these soaps.  And that is what happened with this soap.

This is a mildly cleansing soap made coconut oil-free.  It’s enriched with colloidal Oatmeal, raw organic honey and almond meal that I made with raw almonds.   To me, the scent is primarily almond, but the honey isn’t completely invisible!  The lather is low-ish on this one and the bottom resembles honey comb.  Enriched with silk, goat milk, honey, milk, vitamin E, aloe vera and beeswax, this is a beautiful soap for gifting or for yourself.   Get it here

Lavender Rosemary Herbal Soap

Super fatted to a luxurious 8% with emu oil and lanolin, this bar is second toimg_1938-1 none for superior skin care.  Made with freshly picked rosemary leaves and lavender buds, the herbal scent is beautiful and clean.  This soap is colored with alkanet root and topped with a sprinkling of dried lavender buds.

This bar is coconut oil-free, made with goat milk, homemade buttermilk, whey, coconut milk, raw organic honey, jojoba oil, silk and algae extract to give your skin the best possible cleansing experience.

Kombucha Sunflower

img_1943This soap is vegan, but don’t scream it from the rooftops… LOL  Kidding. 🙂

Enriched with Aloe Vera and Coconut Milk, this one is a treat!  The scent is a Sunflowers type fragrance.  It’s a very nice, not-so-toxic fragrance.  Raw organic Cacao butter, Sunflower seed oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, castor oil and mango butter all contribute their beauty-preserving ingredients to this 8% super-fatted soap.   Olive oil infused with calendula plus calendula flowers added right to the soap – Calendula is said to promote cell repair and growth, is anti-inflammatory and very soothing.

Kombucha?  In Soap?  Yep!  As mentioned in a couple of my previous posts (click the ‘Probiotics’ tag below and they will pop up), I am a Kombucha and Jun brewer and consumer.  While a lot of people think it’s a terrible waste to put booch in soap – I don’t know that it is.  I’ve seen ferments live through some pretty extreme conditions – freezing, cooking, etc.  The way this soap was made, the kombucha was never subjected to extreme heat.  It was added to the soap after the oils and lye were well blended.

Neem Tea Tree

This one was a request.  Neem oil is said to have been in use for around 2000 years, img_1935that it’s been used for dozens of different ailments including eczema, acne and hives.

This is a fine tallow base with 10% neem oil, hemp oil, tea tree essential oil and mineral colorant.

The photo, to me, doesn’t look quite right – is a beautiful light greenish blue.

Lump of Coal for Grownups

Around the end of October, I decided this would be the year that I made a cool soap for parents to put in their kids’ stockings for Christmas. That was Lump of Coal and it was a hit! img_1939

Then I broke my foot, had surgery, then was forced to sit (I call it The Big Sit) for about 6 weeks.

After the New Year, there were a few bars of Lump of Coal left over. I started going to Farmers Markets and Lump of Coal was a surprise hit!  With grownups.  🙂

So, I decided to make Lump of Coal for Grownups. It’s the same recipe, just cut a little bigger.

Soothing Herbal Solid Lotion

Hi everyone!

My apologies for not posting much lately.  In November, I tripped and broke the 5th metatarsal in my RIGHT foot!  Three days after the break, I was in outpatient surgery to have a big screw put in.  AfterFullSizeRender getting the bill, I’m kind of thinking that a couple of sticks and some duct tape may have been the way to go.  Kidding.  Sort of.  🙂

During the big rest for the foot, a thought came to me.  There are many of you who are fans of the Healing Salve and indeed, it is one of my favorites, too.  The actives in that salve are St. John’s Wort, Calendula and Comfrey.  Fine organic olive oil is used to steep the herbs, then the oil is used to make the salve.

Our lotion bars here are a super favorite too – many people order up a year’s worth every winter.  Because they are formulated to melt easily into the skin pretty much on contact, they can’t be shipped in the summer.  HealingSolidLotion

I mixed it up and a combined them, incorporating the best of each.  Then put it into a twist up applicator. Healing Solid Lotion is a superb blend of the Healing Oil, raw organic cocoa butter, lanolin, emu oil, organic shea butter, and Vitamin E.

The small ones are .75 oz and the large ones are 2 oz.  Get yours here.

Rustico Shave Soap

The scents of citrus, spices and chocolate dominate this beautiful soap, making it pleasing to pretty much everyone who has tried it!   Made with beef and buffalo tallows, New Planet gluten free beer, skin-loving aloe, home made organic buttermilk, goat milk, raw local honey, castor oil, shea butter, and silk, it’s conditioning as well as cleansing.  It has plenty of bentonite clay for good razor slip during the shave.

The scent is from a beautiful blend of essential oils and spices, the beautiful color is from chocolate.  This soap has left color on a washcloth a time or two.  However, that washes right out for me.  I use a different soap and lather the washcloth up while still in the shower (I shave first and wash second), wash the rest of my bod and when I rinse the washcloth, the color marks are gone.  So far, it hasn’t colored my husband’s badger brush and I’ve had no complaints.  🙂

Rustico13

The pucks are right at 3″ in diameter and should fit most shaving cups.  However, it’s fairly easy to whittle down to size if the soap is too big.

Lump of Coal

This is a spectacular prank to pull on kids for Christmas.  A lump of lumpofcoalcoal in their stocking….. that turns out to be a really nice soap!

A beautiful beef and buffalo tallow based formula enriched with coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and castor oil; colored with activated charcoal (yes, the suds will be ‘dirty’ looking, but the hands will be CLEAN!) and scented with orange and spice essential oils!

Now, I realize this doesn’t really look like a lump of bituminous coal.  Due to circumstances that were beyond my control, I didn’t get to mash the soap when it should have been mashed into a ‘lump’ shape.  So, we have these very solid ‘anthracite’-looking lumps (OK, use your imagination).  The upside – these bars will LAST so much longer than if they’d gotten mashed.  🙂

It smells beautiful, it cleans well and the shape will fit little hands as well as larger hands.

Each weighs a little over 4oz.  $2.50 Get it here

Lotion Bars Available for Shipping!

Your skin is your body’s largest organ – most of us have heard that in recent years.  When I was growing up, no one really gave much thought to how much skin did or Lotion Bardid not absorb of what was put on it.  By the time I was a teenager, I fully believed the skin absorbed a LOT of what was put on it.  And what an ugly way to learn this:  I got gasoline all over one side of my body and wasn’t able to wash right away.  I got the smell of gasoline out of my clothing before I got it out of my skin and the headache lasted for 3 days.   I believed that my skin had absorbed a lot of gasoline and that caused the headache.   I got a good amount of negative feedback about that theory.

Nowadays, it’s common knowledge that the skin absorbs what is put on it.  Indeed, there are many prescription medications which are delivered transdermally.  Two of the best ways to get Magnesium into your system is to use Magnesium Oil (which is really a brine, but it feels oily initially) or Magnesium Gel – both deliver a quick dose of Magnesium (magnesium plays a part in over 300 processes in the body!) right through the skin.

So, long story short, your skin is absorbing some of EVERYTHING you put on it!  Now, with that in mind, go read some of the ingredients on a bottle of lotion….   Yeah.  Seriously.   We all run around ‘trusting’ that those products are ‘safe’, but are they really?  Especially when you get to looking around for some of the specific chemicals listed and what they’re used for and the potential harms they can cause….  Is your health REALLY that expendable to you?  Not to me.  I truly believe that if it’s not edible, then it shouldn’t go on the skin.  That is why these little gems were created.

Plain and unassuming, our lotion bars don’t really look super pretty.  However, they’ve been meticulously formulated with Organic and raw ingredients to nurture lotionbar2the skin.  It took some time, but these have been perfected for ease of use in cold weather as well.   With a base of organic beeswax and organic coconut oil, enriched with cocoa butter, emu oil, shea & mango butters and lanolin, these are superior skin care.  They’re multi-use items, too – have had customers tell me they use these as eye brow wax, to sleek their pulled-back hair, as nose and/or paw wax on their pooches… the list goes on.  Believe it or don’t, these do NOT leave the skin feeling oily or greasy!  On top of all the goodness these impart to the skin, they also smell delectable!

Lotion Bars are available with or without the tin – if you get one with the tin, save the tin and re-use it!  Lotion Bars are wrapped in heavy duty foil (recyclable) and the melting point is pretty low, so they can’t go in a pocket that is close to the body.  During the summer months in hot lotionbar3places like Arizona, these should probably be refrigerated.  We won’t even try to ship them during the summer, so if you LOVE these, make sure to stock up before the hot weather comes along.

Crusty Drunkard

CrustyDrunkardWith a refreshing dirt and oak moss scent for everyday cleanliness and sobriety.

Sounds like something EVERY pirate would enjoy, doesn’t it?

OK, let’s back up – going to give you the back story…  In looking at my schedule with a realistic eye, it became very clear to me that I wasn’t going to be able to get ALL the things I WANTED to do DONE in the way I am currently having to work.  So, I asked my daughter for help.

Me:  Put your thinking cap on.  I want to make one good beer based shampoo/body bar for men that will go with ALL of the Shave Creams and After Shaves because there isn’t enough time to get 8 different batches of soap done.

Daughter:  Crusty Drunkard Man Soap:  with a refreshing dirt and moss scent for everyday cleanliness and sobriety.  Just kidding.  I’ll come up with something.

Me:  I think you just did.

And here we are.  Crusty Drunkard is a beef and buffalo tallow soap enriched with beer (lots and lots of beer!) silk, argan oil, avocado oil, rice bran oil, meadowfoam seed oil, hemp seed oil, jojoba oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, and vitamin E.  A good amount of coconut oil for a moderate, cleansing lather.  Superfatted to about 7% so it’s not overly drying as a solid shampoo.

My husband says the scent is very nice – he smells hints of vanilla and truthfully, I smell them too.  It smells like an aftershave that my dad wore when I was a kid.  It’s a manly yet classy scent – earthy, not dirty.  It’s been scenting up my living room while it cures out and it gets better with age.  Nifty.

Please believe me – the appearance and scent are much more sophisticated than the name would imply.

Aftershave Balm

aftershave
This is a pic of an empty bottle for a place holder! Every time I get this made up, they go so fast and I forget to take a pic. Will be replaced soon. 🙂

Hi everyone!

Today, I bring to you Aftershave Balm.  This is not a lotion, but a balm made with witch hazel (a botanical astringent) and Organic Aloe Vera to help alleviate any discomfort from razor burn or nicks and to encourage healing of the skin.

This is completely made from scratch – I even make the witch hazel extract from organic witch hazel and rum.  Enriched with Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Argan oil, vegetable glycerin and scented with essential oils and botanicals.

Because this is left on the skin, there will be no versions available with fragrance oils, and essential oils will be used lightly.

Unscented (for those who prefer no scent or wish to add their own essential oil or blend)
Sandalwood Citrus (earthy, rich sandalwood balanced with orange and grapefruit)
Cocoa Orange Spice (cocoa, orange and spices – smells like an orange with cloves in it next to a cup of hot cocoa)
Lemon Eucalyptus (the crisp, clean scent of lemon on balance with eucalyptus)
Rose Geranium (Rose and Geranium Essential oils blended to perfection)
Forest (very green/herbacious scent created with sage, cedar and evergreen essential oils)
Lavender (Lavender essential oil is soothing)
Spice Bay (Bay, Spices and Rum – think old spice with a twist of lime)

Frankincense and Myrrh aka Bar of Bethlehem

When I make the Glucosamine/MSM pain cream, Frankincense and Myrrh resins get infused into one of the oils used in the cream. There is always some of the Resin left over in the bottom of the oil jar. They smell beautiful, they just refuse to dissolve into the oil.

Decided to use them in this soap.

Mildly exfoliating, three shades of gold and gold on top make this a visually interesting bar!  It’s also HUGE – each bar tips the scales at over 7 ounces.

Shaving Cream Soap

Cream Soap is a subject most people don’t know a lot about.  There are few recipes from the late 1800’s ShaveCreamthrough early 1900’s in print and not a whole lot of information written down.   It grieves me some that many of the products out there calling themselves ‘cream soap’ are really just whipped up dish soap with stabilizing chemicals.

As I made my way through the ‘mystery’ of Cream Soap, any family and friends who were interested and willing got Cream Soap to try out in order to give me feedback.  The feedback helped me improve the formula each time.  My husband hasn’t bought commercial shaving products for more than 5 years now.

Cream Soap is a cooked soap made with fats and oils high in stearic acid, two different types of lye, glycerin, aloe vera, vitamin E, oils for conditioning and other properties (each oil has something different to offer to the soap – cleansing, conditioning, lather, hardness, stability), and super creamed while the soap is still hot.  Then it’s got to rest.  This resting period is also called “The Rot” even though there is nothing going bad!  Like many other things, this soap just gets better with age.

I flat refuse to put fragrance oils in Shaving Cream soap.  This soap sits on the skin for a time and the act of shaving can disrupt the surface of the skin, making it more apt to absorb anything in the soap, this Shaving Cream will always only have essential oils or be unscented.

Right now, this is available in the following scents:
Lavender (Lavender essential oil is soothing and cleansing)
Spice Bay (Bay, Spices and Rum – think old spice with a twist of lime)

There has been a page created for Men’s items and all these are listed there as well as on the soap page – as you can see, however, the scents available are not exclusive to men nor to women.

If you have an essential oil or blend you’d like used in your cream soap, don’t hesitate to contact me!  I’m happy to work with you.

Name That Soap! Contest

Hey everyone! I need some help – there’s this really beautifulIMG_0092  exfoliating bar with Frankincense and Myrrh in it (the resins as well as essential oils – NO fragrance oils) for the upcoming Holidays.  Help me name it and the person who suggests the name used will win a bar!! 🙂

Comment below with your idea(s)!

The pic will be published when the soap is released for sale and at that time, the name of the winner will be announced.

Numero Dos :)

NumeroDosOK, this is a touchy subject, but everyone DOES it.

Number 2.  Drop a deuce.  Poo.  Hence the name, Numero Dos.  Made with all natural NON-chemical ingredients, this little gem will not only save embarrassment. it won’t poison you or your environment!

Simply spray a few sprays on the surface of the water, go, flush.

But that’s not where the usefulness of this stuff ends.  Deodorize the air, stinky shoes, etc.  Because there are essential oils and glycerin in this, test it on an inconspicuous spot first – the essential oils are strong and, well, glycerin is glycerin – not really an oil, not really water.  They may make spots on certain fabrics or surfaces – they’ll likely be fairly easy to clean.  But you’ve been warned – I’m not coming to clean it if you mess up… LOL   🙂

Currently, I only make Lemon Eucalyptus (and everyone seems to love it) but if you’d like to request a certain essential oil or blend, feel free to Contact me and we can work out the details.

Ingredients: Water, Odor Killing Enzymes, Essential Oils, Glycerin.

Yours is waiting for you  here

This is a LOW SUDSING formula – because of it’s luxurious ingredients, this soap will not make a big, bubbly suds – but it will clean the skin all the same – well not the ‘same’.  It will be gentler than other, more sudsy soaps.  🙂  See my Coconut Oil Post.

Interested in making your own soap?

somethingbluenewOne of my most favorite things about making soap is the calculation of the formula.  I absolutely love to figure out how much of each oil should go into a certain formulation, what additives ‘fit’, I sketch out how I’d like it to look, even.  There are some formulations that never get off the ground for one reason or another, others that can’t get made fast enough to suit me.  I love doing this from the first idea of a product right to meeting the person who buys it.

I’ve talked to several people who have expressed an interest in making their own soap. The things that hold them back seem to be the following:

1. Difficulty in figuring out a recipe.
2. Not really knowing exactly which steps to take
3. Afraid of Lye.

We will address number 3 first.  Lye is only as dangerous as you make it.  If you take steps to protect yourself (gloves, safety glasses), use non-reactive utensils and containers (plastic, stainless steel) and always, always, ALWAYS pour your lye into your water, the lye will not hurt you.

While I know many people who get all separate utensils for making soap, I don’t.  I use the same pots we eat out of to make soap and they’ve never been cleaner!  EXCEPT in the cases when someone has made a special order for a batch of soap that contains a very heavy fragrance oil (i.e., one that I wouldn’t normally use as I choose those which are not-so-toxic).  Some of those fragrance oils take 2 or 3 batches of laundry soap or liquid soap to get the smell out of the pot!  (It seems to me that the fragrance oils that have the most toxic ingredients also take the longest to get out.) So, if you’re going to use fragrance oils in your soaps all the time, getting separate items to make soap is probably a good idea.

Now, the main point to this post:  I can help you with 1 and 2.  You can let me know what kind of soap you want, the oils and additions (goat milk, etc) you’d like to use and I will formulate a recipe for you. Then give you a step by step tutorial on how to make it.  Just send an email with your information.
